The Process' long awaited spoken word event reevaluates traditional paradigms of the genre, not by hosting a simple reading of works, but instead by offering a multi-media exploration of "words" through performance, action and film

BIOS:

Shelley Hirsch-
Legendary performance artist, avant garde vocalist and multiple NEA recipient Shelley Hirsch is a renown figure in the avant garde community. Shelley is "an unorthodox, extraordinary fusion of vocalist, composer, and performance artist "(Anne LeBaron) whose work encompasses story telling pieces, staged performances, compositions, improvisations, collaborations, installations, and radioplays, which have been presented on 5 continents...with collaborators like John Zorn, Anthony Coleman, Marc Ribot, Christian Marclay, Elliot Sharp, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, DJ Olive, Mark Dresser, David Shea and Ikue Mori, just to name a few. Selley will be bringing her 1,000 inner voices to do some rare solo pieces along with improvisational duets with local favorite J.A. Deane.

J.A. Deane-
Another collaborator of John Zorn, Dino has worked with everyone from Ike and Tina Turner to Brian Eno, Jim O'Rourke, Jon Hassell and Butch Morris. He now conducts the Out of Context ensemble here in Santa Fe and explores the improvisation hand signal language of "conduction" developed by Butch Morris. Dino will be performing with Shelley Hirsch.

Idris Goodwin-
Idris is an award winning hip hop playwright, break beat poet, recording artist and teacher committed to making work that incites, inspires, and engages. The NEA awarded Idris a Playwright-in-Residence grant to explore hip-hop aesthetics in theater. Idris' break beat poetry was featured on season six of Russell Simmons' HBO Def Poetry Jam as well as the Spoken Word Revolution Redux Anthology.

Melody Sumner Carnahan-
"The most musical prose since Gertrude Stein." -- Village Voice.
Melody studied with Robert Ashley at Mills College and has published inumerable short stories and essays. Melody has received fellowships, awards and acknowledgements from the NEA, Art Institute of Chicago, New American Radio, NYC's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Tokyo's NTT/ICC, Atlantic Center for the Arts, University of Technology in Sydney, Australia and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She currently runs the Burning Books small press with Michael Sumner.

Michael Sumner-

In 1979 Michael co-founded Burning Books with writer Melody Sumner Carnahan. He has published nineteen books of, and about, avant-garde music, art, and literature. He has also worked as a graphic artist and book designer, producing books for publishers and museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Michael's work has been shown in the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the San Francisco Art Institute Film Festival, the San Francisco Cinematheque, the Polyphonix International Festival, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition and the World Print Competition.

Rod Harrison-

Many know him as his alter-ego, Jimmy the Carrot, a suave, gin guzzling throwback to the days of the emcee, or from his outstanding work with Theater Grottesco, or as the sullen bee in those T-Mobile ads, or possibly as the Marquis De Rod in a HBO special about naked oil wrestling, or even as "The Voice" in Whole Foods, a character he based on Gary Owens from Laugh-in. Now you can see him demonstrate his acting prowess as the infamous hipster, Lord Buckley in a reenactment of Buckley's debauched delivery of death defying discourses.

j. Christopher Dupuy-
j. christopher dupuy has worked as a Harley-Davidson mechanic, a bartender, a dj, a dishwasher, a golf caddy, a computer tech, managed an independent music store, at a temp staffing agency and served over four years in the Marine Corps. He is currently working on a play and novel
which he plans to finish and publish simultaneously.

Damon & Sabrina Griffith-
Known locally as the leaders of The Bullseal! Consortium, a raucous, Beefheart-esque, yet strangely euphonic bohemian ensemble spouting impossible verse, this couple have put their fingers into virtually every type of creative art known to man from crafting puppets and poetry to crafting the reality that surrounds them.

Daniel Drell-
Terkltoyser is a bemused fictive entity, residing primarily but not exclusively upon his own hard drive; an irresponsible helical VortexT, likely to wreak all manner of mischief, malfunction and malfeasance upon the lavish systems of control our seductive suburban demiurge deems sweet and useful. Carhorns blare, windshield wipers and supermarket doors operate with violent and unexpected abandon. All roads lead to Cleveland.

Sunburned Hand of the Man + Gregg Turner of the Angry Samoans Oct. 20th

Is it Psych? Is it Noise? Is it Freak-Folk?
Or possibly some unknown quantity still to be named?

..

With constant comparisons to the German Art-Rock band CAN and reviews that largely are unable to pin them down to anything more specific than part of the "New Weird America" scene as described in Wire Magazine, Sunburned Hand of the Man refuse to worry what you call them. Playing hundreds of gigs in the underground avant-garde-rock scene for the past 10 years proves their unwavering determination and devotion to their unique brand of outsider music. From the New York Times article by Ben Ratliff: "...it carries an edge of ragged, freaky attitude, some kind of cross between spacey naïveté and confrontational sarcasm."

We like that.

They will be joining us for a rare, intimate evening of music and socializing this October.

Also joining us on this evening will be singer, songwriter and guitarist for the legendary Angry Samoans, Gregg Turner. Did you know Gregg was one of the original music reviewers of Creem magazine along with Lester Bangs and Richard Meltzer? And that he formed the punk band Vom with Richard Meltzer in 1976? And he also played with Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators?

UNREAL!

We are super excited to have Gregg come and share his wit and warble with us as well.

..

This show will fill up really quick, folks. And remember, there is only so much space at The Process. Don't be one of the unlucky members who wishes they could have seen it!

RAINBOW ARABIA AND GANGI ON NOVEMBER 2ND! POST HALLOWEEN PARTY!

The Process will be hosting two of the best bands you have never heard of on NOVEMBER 2nd. I will let the press do our speaking for us....

Rainbow Arabia

Creating the kind of noise you could imagine the DFA might make had they ever decided to throw a party in the underground ruins of Egypt and the ghosts of the Pyramids were shaken into action by the sinuous rhythms and earth quaking bass lines. Blending the sandy sounds of the Middle East with the young energy of the Los Angeles youth and you have Rainbow Arabia. -Dublab

Marrying dance-music with traditional middle eastern music, real life married couple Danny and Tiffany are Rainbow Arabia. Already rolling in Southern Cali, this duo is putting their own spin on electronic workings. This fall, the pair is primed to blow the F' up, performing at NYC's legendary CMJ festival and laying down a track for the much-hyped Cure tribute tribute due this fall. Peep "I Know I see I Love I Go" from their forthcoming malay of middle eastern madness The Basta for a taste of what's hopefully the future of many more international explorations. -Urb magazine

GANGI

Gangi (who recently headlined at a CMJ Showcase in New York with band members Matt Gangi, Lyle Nesse and Andy Jordan) uses dissonance, contrasting sun-shining optimism with a harsh reality by juxtaposing dream-like vocals, guitar playing and melodies (at times echoing fractured pop of the 60's and 70's) with darker toned samples. Some of the samples are appropriated from news sources and others are sounds or musical elements that often give the song a harsh edge.

Gangi's lyrics are loose narratives and ponderations that involve a random variety of situations, cohered by what's ostensibly a politically significant tone. As mentioned in an earlier post, "in a world of excess and of constant interconnections, psychedelia can be more easily found within the kaleidoscope of this intricately fragmented reality than in the complete abstraction of imagined, subjective form that lent itself more to the purist mind-set of modernism". Gangi's music achieves a transcendent abstract quality not by disorienting the audience to the point of incomprehensibility or complete subjectivity (which is something many other contemporary experimental bands do), but by sophisticatedly disorienting through avoidance to define era, instrumentation and source.

Eclecticism is being even further pushed and explored in the music with the recent introduction of new instruments, including the African drum and saxophone, at their CMJ showcase performance. Excessive eclecticism to the point of abstraction is clearly the new psychedelia.

NEW WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS DOCUMENTARY IN A MIDNIGHT SCREENING!

WOW!

The Process is super happy to be posting this news.

In March of 2009, we will be hosting a midnight screening of the new documentary:
Words of Advice – William S. Burroughs on the Road

This is a Danish film from 2007 focusing on the latter years of Burroughs' life and work with never before seen footage!

Words of Advice - William S. Burroughs on the Road

Lars Movin, Steen Møller Rasmussen, 2007

A portrait of the American beat generation writer William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), based on never-before-seen footage from his visit to Denmark in October 1983, and from his later years in Lawrence, Kansas. After having spent more than a quarter of a century outside of the United States, in Mexico, Tangier, Paris and London, Burroughs returned to New York in 1974. Shortly after he began touring and reading his work to new generations of readers and thus establishing himself as a cult figure. The film focuses on Burroughs' unique talent as a performer, and on his later work, especially what is known as The Last Trilogy.
